Real Time Ultrasonic Echo Processing: Progress in robotics research is limited by availability of affordable fast accurate sensors. This project addresses this concern by researching real time hardware implementation of ultrasonic sensing that can be incorporated into many applications at low cost. A real time solution to the simultaneous localisation and mapping problem in mobile robotics will be tackled.
Humanoid Robotics: This project aims to investigate and implement humanoid robots that can achieve the following goals accept simple natural commands from a human operator - such as by voice, hand signals or even facial expressions convey information back via sound, facial expression, bodily motion, eye movement.
actively learn tasks for manipulating the environment, with a particular emphasis on assisting elderly or handicapped individuals.
Underwater Sonar for Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping: The project will research new underwater sonar sensing approaches to enable multiple target tracking and feature extraction in both natural and man-made underwater environments. This will assist autonomous navigation by underwater vehicles.
